Anyways, a little thought of mine:

I thought the villain in these 2 episodes sucked.

I mean, compare it to the other villains we had so far:

-Celestia's evil sister that was banished for 1000 years on the moon. She takes control of the world, hides Celestia, and repeatedly attempts to stop Twilight and her friends from reaching her using mind tricks, dangerous situations and scary things.

-A God of Chaos who was turned to stone, and who now came back. He takes over the world, hides the only weapon able to stop him and makes Twilight and all of her friends turn against each other. If it wasn't for Celestia giving a hand (by horribly torturing Spike), he would've won.

-The Queen of shapeshifting creatures that infiltrates Canterlot disguised as a Princess, fools everyone other than Twilight, and even manages to start an attack with her enormous army on the Kingdom before being stopped.

And now, what do we have? An old, evil King that we only see half of his entire body through most of the episode, and that cursed a land 1000 years ago and is now a giant cloud of general evil outside of a bubble of protection. His main weapons? Spawning dark crystals and scaring the shit out of ponies while patiently waiting for the defenses to weaken and hope they don't find the Crystal Heart. His entire traps can be beaten if two people face them together, and his hidding spot for the McGuffin that he desperatly does not want anyone to find is laughably simple. The only reason no one found it before was because no one wanted to go near the Castle. But if any pegasus or allicorn would could have came close to the castle had been curious as to what kind of view you get from the top of the really high tower that no stairs lead to, this episode would've been much shorter.

I don't mind the episode. It was pretty good. But it almost seems like they gave no effort for the villain.

Why does everyone keep saying that?

Chrysalis was way worse than this villian.

For one thing, he's not even the main villian. If you remember, Celestia and Luna cursed him with this, which would imply he's normally much more powerful (As in, powerful enough to require both Princesses to beat.) Time is the main villian in this one. If Twilight had taken just a few seconds more time, it all would have been over.

Nightmare Moon and Discord were both beaten by Twilight (And the rest, but mostly Twilight.)

He's basically like movie Sauron. Except, instead of Frodo having to come to his lair and defeat him, he had to go to the Shire and steal the Ring before it was turned against him. And he had to get past a giant shield being held up by a pink horse.

Also, I think the Heart existed in something of a pocket realm. As in, it didn't actually exist if you just flew up to the top of the tower. You had to get past the door, and then go up the stairs, and then get past the traps.

The point of the whole episode is that it was a test, for Twilight. If Twilight had failed, then Luna and Celestia would have just gone back and killed the wizard.

Granted, it was time that was the biggest enemy in this, but it doesn't help the fact that the King is pretty much the villain.

Chrysalis wasn't a bad villain. I can't stress this enough. Her plan was brilliant, with only one pony seeing through her disguise, and she managed to subdue Celestia and launch an attack. Her only downfalls were that she didn't research her part (which is what made Twilight suspicious in the first place) and she then became cocky and careless when the attack had started. What would've had happened if she had succeeded? Why, she'd be ruler of everything, with no one able to stop her, and I have no clue what changelings eat but I have a theory that they like pony meat because I enjoy picking the most violent answer at times.

This evil unicorn king, however, simply waits outside the protection bubble, going "LOOK AT ME EVERYONE GOD AIN'T I SCARY" while waiting for the protection to fade. No trying to find a way to counter it, no secret weapons, just patiently waiting with a menacing glare. What would have happened if he had succeeded? He'd scare a few ponies and take back his kingdom...for about a week. Then, when Cadence had rested, Celestia and Luna could roll in and stop him again while Cadence makes another shield, and then the group could've looked for the Crystal Heart for as long as they had wanted.

Why would you think that?

Once Chrysalis won the city, would everypony just give up? YOu saw how many changelings just six ponies were able to defeat. Can you imagine all of Equestria coming to beat back the changeling "army"? (Im pretty sure they feed on love, by the way.)

On top of that, Luna would still be alive and well, as well as Cadence. So, Chrysalis' plan was not full-proof.

Once King Somba won back his kingdom, why would you assume he would let Cadence live? His curse was broken right before he was defeated, so had they no gotten the heart, he would have been a serious problem. I mean, he still would have lost, because both Princesses beat him before, but he would have done arguably more, or, at least, the same amount of damage to the Kingdom as Chrysalis could have.

Again, the comparison with Sauron. Sauron is known as a pretty badass villian, but he couldn't really do much, could he? Not until he got his physical form back.

And that's the whole thing. If Somba was able to win, he would become massively more powerful. As it is, he's weak, but that's because he's under a curse. If he had his full powers, he would have easily beaten down the shield and killed all of them.

I mean, no, he's no Discord, but come on, who is? But I don't think he was a bad villian, or a boring one. In fact, I think he was way more interesting than Chrysalis. And yeah, he doesn't have much backstory, but neither does she.

I think the thing people are picking up on, is that we don't KNOW this villian like we knew the other ones. All the other big-time villians spoke, they had lines, and a personality. But this one did not. Personally, I don't think that ruins him.

As for not trying to get in, he sort of was, but he's kind of limited in what he can do, you know? Cadence has a giant magical forcefield, it's not like you can just slip in through a crack, or find a back door. You sort of have to just wait for them to get away.

But I think he was trying to get in. I doubt he just sat out there doing nothing.

It makes more sense when you remember that all of this was still being considered a test for Twilight by Celestia.
We don't see Celestia at all during the whole Nightmare Moon thing until after it's all over, but we can assume that she pretty much knew how all of that was going to pan out, considering she deliberatley sent Twilight to Ponyville to make 5 other friends and then use the Elements to get rid of the evil in Luna. All of that, we can assume, was a test as well.

When Discord showed up, that was definatley not a test. Celestia is dead serious when briefing the Mane Six about it, and it's clear that she has no control over the situation and the only reason she is having them take care of it is because she can't use the Elements anymore, which are the only things capable of stopping him.

Same goes with Queen Chrysalis. She showed up out of the blue, and Celestia tried to get rid of her herself, but got knocked the fug out.

But here, although Celestia is pretty serious about the whole thing, she's not showing as much urgency as she was with Discord. This could suggest that, while the return of King Sombra and the Crytsal Empire was an unexpected turn of events, she still didn't see the king as too big of a threat, so she decided to make defeating him into a teaching exercise for Twilight.

So basically, King Sombra being a not as threatening villain makes sense storywise.

I always promise myself I'll never analyze this show any further than I already have, but I always end up breaking that promise.

And that's another reason that Chrysalis and Discord seem worse than Nightmare Moon and Somba.

I doubt Sauron in pony form would've killed Cadence, or any pony for that matter, because I'm sure they would have had time to retreat before he came back to having his full powers back. Not to mention that a test given to Twilight by her magical teacher would probably not involve a death if failure was the end result.

Chrysalis still had the upper hand if she would've succeeded, and she could've done a lot of damage before being eventually overthrown. Yes, ponies would've fought back, but the main ruler of the land and the main captain of the army were both in no way to fight, and Luna is weaker than her sister. Not to mention that the majority of people in Canterlot seem to be rich snobs who couldn't fight for shit, so it would take at least a day before ponies from other areas come over and any real battle would start. Sure, the Royal Guard could give them a decent fight, but they would've been caught by surprise and had no definitive battle plans, especially with enemies that can mirror how they look.

I personally wouldn't have minded a bit of explanation for Sombra. He didn't get much, unlike the others.
Nightmare Moon was evil because she had been ignored/neglected for quite some time (also, 1000 years on the moon likely did not improve matters).
Discord was evil because he is the spirit of Chaos and Disharmony. So being evil kinda comes with the job.
Chrysalis needed/wanted to power to feed and strengthen herself and her race.
Sombra's inspiration was..... I'm not sure. Being a dick, apparently. I suppose wanting to rule a kingdom with an iron shadowy fist could be his reason but I rather hoped for a bit more.

Hopefully all this "We must prepare our Super Mage-soldier for the next level of study, dear sister. Then, no-one will stop our blood soaked empire." eventually leads to something that may give a little insight.

Fair enough. I still would have liked a little more of him. He seemed like he could have been really interesting. Especially so would be where he got his power.
Oh well, it was still a good episode.
