It mentions Jonah Hex- did you guys SEE that? It was so so bad. I laughed my ass off.

I don't think that they're attempting to change the material of the films in favor of coming off as more serious or adult. I think they're just responding to what audiences crave, in terms of drama and inner turmoil. A screenplay with no serious soul-searching moments in it is a rarity these days, I think because people really enjoy watching their characters struggle in an emotional way. Plus, if you don't go a certain angle when writing it, these things can be badly mishandled.

This, because expectations from fanbases of a franchise can wind up driving the movie to be overly-hyped and thus disappointing. Not that there's anything wrong with being excited for a movie, but I feel some franchises are played too much to the fans' expectations. The Star Trek movies, for example. I love those damn movies, but they're so callback-y and full of references that much of their appeal is towards people who were already Trekkers. It's pretty dang masturbatory, I must say.

I went to the film thread and was like "where is that link I posted I guess a mod deleted it because it was a dullard oh well" and I came here and Augustus Caesar had declared war on me and people were rebelling in the streets

But at least it was interesting
WERE YOU NOT INTERESTED?

Ziggy had said everything I wanted to say but better. I can't see Sam's video it won't load for me, can someone explain it?

The video is by vsauce and describes how internal perception varies from person to person and how color is purely a construct of the mind and there is no accurate way to explain internal experience. It's an interesting vid to watch

The Fire Alarm is Ringing. What Are You Waiting For? How a fear of change can prevent you from acting when it matters most.

Forensic reconstruction after a famous restaurant fire in the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Kentucky confirmed that many of the victims sought to pay before leaving, and so died in a queue.

also why the hell have i never heard of medium.com
this commenting style is revolutionary

Interesting choice of Andrew Bird's Bonnaroo performance for an example of a live concert. See, this is what he does with his live performances.

Live:

Recorded:

They're two different songs, and Bird never tries to make them the same. This is done on purpose, each song is constantly evolving for each new show, even resulting in multiple recorded versions of the same tune. See both Skins for an example, I/Imitosis, or Sweetbread/Dark Matter. In any case, this makes each concert a fresh experience and you do not compare it to your preconceived notion of what it should sound like. In my opinion, the changes improve the songs and so every concert gets better and better, but to be honest his latest album just didn't light my fire because of its western vibe.

In any case, I think the changes made are essential to create a hugely enjoyable live performance.

Hadn't contributed to this, but you know I never see anybody live. Sometimes live recordings are my very favoritest, though, because they lend such an air of intimacy to a song. Not to mention that it makes it more legitimate- here is a music artist and they are playing music!- and is kind of a test of musicians' skill.

Can anybody suggest any good TED Talks? I have seen one or two in the past and I like them, but I dunno, I haven't gone and sifted through them. I am lazy plz help.

I just read a short article about how having power diminishes your capacity for feeling empathy. I thought the most interesting part in it was how empathy actually happens. When I was younger I thought often about people's motivations, and whether there was actually altruism in the world. Probably it doesn't exist, and it has more to do with how helping other people makes you feel. This doesn't necessarily faze me, but it's interesting to apply to real-world things, like giving hand-outs to the homeless and such.

Lennart Green is a badass! I love his skills, so sweet. His blonde assistant is kind of a bimbo, though she can shuffle well.

There was an episode of Friends that dealt with this. Phoebe was irate with Joey who kept proclaiming there is no such thing as selfish deeds, and she spent the episode attempting to prove him wrong. I think it just comes with the territory that helping people makes one feel good and it isn't necessarily terrible.

This may bum you out to know this but its been proven mathematically for genes causing altruism to propagate more then genes that are every man for himself.

Really? Do you have any other things about this, it sounds interesting to me.

@Holly: yes I remember that! I think that was what provoked me about it.
